About LABC
Protecting the public. Helping businesses.
LABC's mission is to ensure that buildings are healthy, safe, sustainable and accessible for all users and tenants whether domestic, commercial or public service.
LABC coordinates the technical application of the Building Regulations and influences new or revised regulations covering new technology, new building methods and environmental performance.
LABC also provides a national marketing function to build awareness of local authority building control amongst the public, developers, designers and contractors.
In recent years local authority building control teams have shifted the emphasis of their work from "tick box" checking at the end of building projects to helping developers, designers and builders to make the best choices when planning projects.
This change of emphasis achieves high quality building without annoying and expensive corrections happening late in the construction phase.

Background
A Streamlined Organisation
LABC is the trading name of District Surveyors Association Limited.
LABC represents the views of the building control departments within the local authorities of England and Wales. It was formed in June 2005, and became operational in October of that year.
It had two predecessor bodies: the District Surveyors Association, formed to present the views of local authority building control officers to Government; and LABC Services, a local authority controlled company set up to market local authority building control in the face of competition from private sector approved inspectors.
Combining these functions has led to increased efficiency and effectiveness.
