Parts F, J & L 'Lite'

Shared Training 3-hour course

Shared Training 3-hour course
Course Overview

This Shared Training course looks at all the key changes contained in the new Part L and relates the changes to Parts J & F of the Building Regulations.

It offers a practical view of what needs to happen in the three critical stages of a project.

The course is full of tips and hints describing how best to approach projects and what not to do in order to avoid problems at the end of the project.

After the course, delegates will understand the changes in the new Part L and  the changes of emphasis and what these mean in everyday work.

Who should attend?

This course is suited to any building professional who wants to get a fast overview of the new Part L, plus practical insights into the difference it will make to the way we work.

Architects, developers, builders, contracts, specialist contractors, building consultants, surveyors, planners and building control surveyors will all benefit from attending this short course.

How does Shared Training work?

  • Up to 5 local authorities can participate.
  • One authority is nominated to "host" the training and provides a single point of contact for all administration including confirming, dates, rooms, catering, delegate names, etc.
  • You supply and confirm a suitable venue and catering. Rooms must be appropriate for formal in-depth training with comfortable tables/chairs, privacy, quietness, with projector and screen etc.
  • Most courses are suitable for a maximum of 35 delegates - although some workshop courses may have a lower maximum and some update courses can be expanded.
  • LABC Training will invoice the host authority.

Shared Training offers neighbouring authorities the opportunity to jointly run an LABC training event. LABC Training will provide the trainer, content, work material handouts and CPD certificates. You provide a suitable venue, catering and book your own staff onto the courses.

Course Outline

Section 1 - The Design Phase

  • Transitional arrangements - similarities and differences to 2006
  • Design energy assessment - accounting for expected air tightness and ventilation
  • Avoiding the 'paradox' - if your build quality is too good, you might not comply!
  • Specification of works - how to avoid issues and why you need to re-document calcs because of "tweaks"
  • Hitting the Building Control deadline - submit energy calcs 2-days before you commence work
  • The new relationship between Parts L, J and F - ventilation will be a much bigger issue
  • How to please the Building Control Surveyor during the plan check

Section 2 - During Construction

  • Make sure you follow the design specification -note any changes
  • Critical areas for inspection - including ACDs or alternatives
  • What might go wrong - and how to avoid or rectify problems
  • Issues on the substitution of materials - don't leave it to merchants or sub-contractors, understand default values
  • Supervise workmanship and materials - a 'clerk of works' approach pays off
  • What happens if you miss your targets?

Section 3 - At the end of the job

  • Have you built what you designed? - Is it marketable and profitable?
  • If not… what consequences are you facing?
  • trading standards
  • warranties
  • loss of funding
  • expensive remedial works
  • Pre-completion testing - testing regimes and assessments
  • documents and certificates - by whom, from where
  • what happens if I don't do things correctly - no completion certificate, no sale!
